Nasty C Says Music Streaming Has educed the Value of Music

South African rapper Nasty C believes the rise of digital streaming has significantly lowered the value of music for artists.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based OKAY FM, he explained that musicians no longer earn the kind of income that once came from physical CD sales.

He noted that it now takes about 3,000 streams to equal the earnings of just one CD sale, a reality he describes as discouraging for many artists who rely on music as their main source of income.

Now an independent artist, Nasty C says the majority of his revenue does not come from streams but from touring, performing, and selling merchandise.

“I’m not on a record label anymore, so I see my money clearly,” he explained. “Most of my income comes from touring.

The streaming thing has devalued music a lot. It takes roughly 3,000 streams to match the price of one CD. You have to be creative with touring and merchandise to really see money.”

He emphasized that during the CD era, music sales were more direct and very rewarding, but artists today must look beyond streaming platforms to sustain their careers.
