Nollywood and the wider Nigerian entertainment industry are in grief following the death of actor and content creator Odira Nwobu, popularly known as “Joseph The Dreamer.” He passed away in his hotel room in South Africa on Monday, November 24, at the age of 44.

The news was confirmed by the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, in an interview with Linda Ikeji’s Blog (LIB).

Rollas revealed that Nwobu had travelled to South Africa with eight other influencers for work when he suddenly passed away.

He added that an autopsy is yet to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Odira Nwobu, celebrated for his humor and comic skits, left behind a legacy of laughter through his personal triumphs and challenges.

Fellow content creator Awuzie Frankline confirmed the news on Facebook, sharing heartbreaking videos of Nwobu unresponsive.

In his post, Frankline wrote: “God, why! ODIRA, why leave us… The call I received now was not a good one.” In another video, he added: “You were full of life even some hours ago in South Africa, and you even had your thanksgiving service just a few months ago.”

Tragically, Nwobu passed away just five months after surviving a life-threatening car crash in June 2025 on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, an accident that claimed multiple lives.

The Anambra-born actor was hospitalized and recovered from his injuries at the time.

Reports suggest that Nwobu died after returning from a night out at a local club in South Africa, where he had been socializing with friends.

Veteran filmmaker Arthur Scoot noted that the actor had a history of high blood pressure, which may have contributed to his death.

Fans and colleagues have taken to social media to express shock and disbelief, many highlighting the tragic irony of surviving a near-fatal accident only to reportedly pass away months later.

At the time of reporting, no official statement had been released by Nwobu’s family or management, and the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed.
