Governments at all levels in Nigeria have been advised to make good use of the media to foster unity and solve conflicts in the country, especially the farmers and herders crisis in parts of the country with a view to ensuring peace in the land.

The advice was given on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of a three-day workshop organised for journalists on Disaster Risk Reduction and Peace Building by a non governmental organisation (NGO), Christian Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria (CRUDAN), held at the Paradise Homedec International Hotel, Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

Declaring the workshop open, CRUDAN Programme Officer in charge of central zone, Mr Tulari Tine, asserted that the media if properly utilised would be useful in reorienting the people on the need to promote peaceful coexistence among them.

The programme officer said the topic “Disaster Risk Reduction” for the workshop was carefully chosen in view of the current climate change and environmental hazards such as floodings experienced in parts of the country, leading to loss of lives and destruction of farmlands as well as farmers and herders clashes in parts the country.

Tine said at the end of the workshop, supported a German organisation, Bread for the World, journalists would be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to promote safety and resilience to conflicts and disasters.

He, however, charged them to put into use the knowledge they are going to acquire during the training and also pass the message of peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, irrespective of their religious and ethnic differences in their various reportage.

Speaking about CRUDAN, the programme manager informed that the NGO was established in 1990 with the objective of facilitating developments in rural and urban areas of the country.

According to him, the NGO was established with the mission to promote sustainable development through advocacy, capacity building and humanitarian response in collaboration with the church and other stakeholders.
