Federal and state government workers on Thursday resumed work in Kaduna after a two day Sallah break declared by the federal government.

Although only a few offices were under lock and key, many staff resumed duties.

They, however, lamented the hardship, insecurity threat and rising cost of food items.

Some who could not hide their travails expressed concern over the rising cost of commodities without a corresponding increase in salaries.

Others were concerned about the insecurity threatening the state, and Nigeria, worrying that they no longer sleep at night

Mohammed Adamu, an accountant with Kaduna polytechnic said he was in pain over the kidnap activities around Kaduna and environs” lamenting that some households have gone bankrupt as kidnappers often demand a ransom that their 35 years retirement benefit cannot pay.

According to him, ” one of my colleagues’ son was kidnapped early hour of Tuesday last week, up till now, they cannot raise the ransom demanded. My colleague has not been coming to work since then. Every morning, he goes out looking for someone to borrow him money he never dreamt of having.

“Many of us coming to work, have nothing to transport us back home. Salaries have not been paid, foodstuff is so out of reach of the common man. We only come to answer present.” He lamented

Also, Mrs. Memuna Adesina who works at the Federal Secretariat, Kawo Kaduna, said she spends 1,000 Naira daily coming and going back home, coupled with her meagre salary which she said, little above 40,000 Naira.

She said she finds it difficult to feed her children, pay school fees and pay for the two rooms apartment she occupies.

” I don’t really know what else to do. I am working as if am not receiving any salary. Before the month ends, I owe several people whom I collected foodstuff, soap and ingredients from.

She explained that those who are absent from their duty post at resumption could be because they have no transport money.

“I have to borrow before I came to the office today. Those who are not in the office may be due to lack of transport fare, because salaries wre not paid before we all went for Sallah break.” She said
