Sadio Mane in Senegal World Cup squad despite injury scare

Despite an injury scare on Tuesday, Sadio Mane has been named to Senegal’s World Cup roster for Qatar.

In Bayern Munich’s 6-1 triumph over Werder Bremen, the 30-year-old attacker was taken off during the first half.

African champions, Senegal will start their Group A campaign at the mundial against the Netherlands on 21 November.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said at a press conference in Dakar on Friday, “We are monitoring the situation and we sent a doctor from the federation.

“On Thursday, Sadio spent the whole day in Munich before travelling to Austria for further tests. The good news is that he does not need an operation.

“It is important to continue to monitor his injury and hope that in two or three weeks there is a change. We will give everything to have Sadio back.”

FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, from Senegal, reacting to the news that Mane could miss the tournament, suggested that the forward should be treated by a witch doctor to get him fit.

“We are going to use witch doctors. I don’t know [if they are effective], but we are going to use them anyway,” Samoura told Europe 1 radio.

“Hopefully there will be a miracle. He has to be there.”

The former Liverpool player is Senegal’s star performer and talisman. In February, when the Teranga Lions defeated Egypt in a penalty shootout to win the Africa Cup of Nations, Mane scored the decisive penalty that gave Senegal its first continental championship.

And in a crucial play-off to qualify for the Qatar World Cup, Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties in a match in which Mane faced off against his former Liverpool teammate Mohammed Salah.

Mane repeated the feat, scoring the winning spot-kick as Senegal prevailed.

With 34 goals in 93 appearances, Mane is his nation’s all-time leading scorer. Cisse will be anxious about his availability before Senegal’s opening match against the Dutch, as well as their subsequent games against hosts Qatar (on November 25) and Ecuador (on November 29).
