OFFICIAL: Karim Benzema out of the Qatar World Cup with thigh injury

France striker Karim Benzema will miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after he sustained a thigh injury in training.

The French Football Federation said the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner had suffered a thigh injury and would not be able to feature in the mundial.

An MRI scan confirmed Benzema has thigh muscle injury which will require a three-week recovery period.

The defending champions, France are in Group D alongside Denmark, Tunisia and Australia.

Mainwhile, head coach Didier Deschamps has until Monday to name a replacement for the striker.

The loss of Benzema will be a further blow to the squad, which already lacks the services of midfielders Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante due to injuries, while Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is trying to be fit to play having missed his past five club matches.

After limping out of practise on Wednesday, RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku was forced to withdraw from the competition. And Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt was called in to fill his spot.

Anthony Martial of Manchester United is one among the possible replacements for Benzema.
