Bollywood Legend Dharmendra Passes Away at 89
Indian cinema has lost one of its most iconic stars, as veteran actor Dharmendra has died at the age of 89.
The legendary performer, long regarded as one of Bollywood’s most beloved leading men, passed away on Monday morning at his Juhu residence, where he had been recuperating following a major health scare earlier this month. His family later performed the last rites at the Pawan Hans crematorium.
Dharmendra is survived by his wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, as well as his six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol.
Born in 1935 in a village in Ludhiana, Dharmendra entered the Hindi film industry in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Throughout the 1960s, he built a reputation as a charming romantic lead, appearing in classics such as Bandini, Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Khamoshi, and earning wider recognition with Chetan Anand’s war drama Haqeeqat.
His breakthrough came with Phool Aur Patthar in 1966, which turned him into a commercially bankable star. Over the next two decades, he delivered a string of blockbusters across genres, including Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, the cult classic Sholay, and Yaadon Ki Baaraat.
